F7/3.7 Emily Lois Freemantle = David Sapsford
(1852 - ) [m.1870] ( ca 1848 - )
Emily Lois Freemantle was the seventh child of George Freemantle* and Elizabeth Ann Freemantle nee Stillwell. She had three older sisters, plus two who had died young and her brother, George Richard who was born about two years before she was, but died when she was nine months old. She was born on 23.10. 1852 in Cradock and by the time she was three years old her parents, her sister and she moved to Middelburg, Cape. Then, when she was aged 15 they were living in Hopetown.
On 18.5.1870, aged 18, she married in Hopetown, David Sapsford (born about 1848) and there were eleven children of this marriage.
Unfortunately no further information has been confirmed for this collection concerning Emily Lois or David Sapsford or their children but it would seem that he was the younger son of David Sunley Sapsford (b. ca. 1815 in Durbanville (?) Cape, married on 7.1.1826 in Paarl, Cape) and Marth Cecilia Sapsford nee Jordaan (b. ca. 1820); and that his elder brother was John Thomas Sapsford (b. between 1840 and1845 in Durbanville, Cape, who married Susanna de Villiers, born about 1844, in Swellendam in about 1864). There were possibly two sisters as well.
[IGI gives the names of (i) Joanna Maria Sapsford who married in Cape Town in 1863 Marthinus J. E. van Rheede van Oudshoorn and (ii) Elizabeth Maria Sapsford who married on 16.8.1852 in Paarl, Cape, Jacobus Hendrikus Spengler but, as both had the second name of Maria, it is not clear if these were the same person as no dates of birth were given.]
